Highlands has been a mountain respite for over a century allowing visitors to unwind in town while being within a short drive of dozens of hiking trails, waterfalls and rivers. Highlands is one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River, with an elevation at 4,118 feet. It's also located in one of the few temperate rain forests in North America, the Nantahala National Forest.

Downtown Highlands offers plenty of art galleries, antique stores, book stores and restaurants. In the middle of downtown Highlands is Old Edwards Inn and Spa, a European-style resort consisting of the historic main building, a full-service spa, Madison’s Restaurant and Wine Garden.

Here's a sampling of the things you can do in the area.

Five of the restaurants in downtown Highlands have been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. From fine dining at Madison's to simple , fast and fresh takeout food from Mountain Fresh Grocery, there are a variety of dining options in Highlands.
